Georgia’s northern border has high  snow-covered mountains. A slightly lower partly forest-covered mountain ridge makes up the border with Turkey and Armenia in the southwest.   Between these the lowland spreads from the Black Sea in the west gradually changing to a higher plateau around the capital Tbilisi and then again turning into lowland towards the border with Azerbaijan in the very east. Around 40 % of Georgia is covered with green forests.

According to the WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) there is no other country in Europe with such rich flora and fauna as Georgia.  No other European country has managed to preserve the original landscape so well, or can boast such a diverse landscape on such a small territory as Georgia. With regard to biodiversity, Georgia is close to being unique in the world, as is a relatively short trip from subtropical areas to snow-covered mountains.
Georgia has five national parks. The Borjomi-Kharagauli national park in the southwestern part of Georgia is one of the biggest in Europe.

There are between 4 000 and 4 500 species of vascular plants in Georgia and more than 300 of these originate in Georgia. 10 of the 33 species of peonies, and 5 of 11 species of snowdrops are to be found in Georgia. Especially in the mountains the flowery meadows are explosions of bright colours.

Georgia is a paradise for birdwatchers as it sits right on the routes of many migratory birds.  The pheasant is believed to originate from the Caucasus. The bird has got its name after Phasis (Φάσις), the Greek name of the largest river in the western part of Georgia - Rioni. The river has its origin in the mountains of Svaneti and runs through the Georgian port city of Poti out in the Black Sea. Poti was founded as a Greek city and once also carried the name Phasis.  The Latin name for pheasant is Phasianus colchicus. „Colchicus” comes from the name of the former West-Georgian empire - Colchis.
