Svaneti is located in the north west of Georgia and is sometimes described as the European Himalayas or the Roof of Europe. Here you will find the highest peaks of Georgia. Even though Mount Shkhara is the highest, it is considered that the twin peaks of Ushba – described as the „King of the Caucasus” – is the most legendary and beautiful mountain in the entire Caucasus. Ushba used to be considered as a holy mountain and anybody who tried to climb it would be punished by God. Ushba is characterized as the most difficult and dangerous peak to climb – and thus also the dream of all mountain climbers.

There is an impressive biodiversity in Svaneti. In the addition to the yellow rhododendron luteum, parts of the landscape are covered by small forests of the white rhododendron caucasicum. Cold air currents from the north are not always able to climb over the mountains and moist air blows inwards from the Black Sea in the west. This, together with the soil, gives the flowers incredibly intense and beautiful colours.   Flower meadows in magnificent colours can be found nearly all over Svaneti. The tree line is at around 2 500 metres. Forests cover about half of the territory.
